WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LEAVE THE WORLD LUSHER THAN YOU FOUND IT ?
An important distinction with Lush is that it goes beyond sustainability . Sustainability , per the name , is about building processes that last and will be viable for the world long term .
Lush also strives to proactively improve the state of the planet . The manufacturer runs and funds a number of projects in biodiversity hotspots around the world .
These projects use regenerative agriculture , conservation , restoration and collaboration with local communities to produce materials that feed back into its products .
An example of this is Lush turning the waste of its Tagua Nut supplier in Ecuador into a new product .
“ Tagua is a non-timber forest product ,” Gabbi explains .
“ It ’ s super important to keep those forests standing and create forest economies . Our supplier of these predominantly makes buttons and has the powder left over . Powder which we ’ ve incorporated back into our process to make a beautiful exfoliant .”
“ It really starts with our supplier selection ,” says Gabbi Loedolff , Director of Buying at Lush .
“ When we think about our mission of leaving the world lusher than we found it , there are three ways we ’ re doing this across our supply chain .
“ Firstly we design products from scratch , with all our regenerative principles , but this takes a lot of time and resources .
“ Secondly we find amazing suppliers that are already aligned and restoring ecosystems and being part of local value addition and bring them into our supply chain .
