An important distinction with Lush is that it goes beyond sustainability. Sustainability, per the name, is about building processes that last and will be viable for the world long term.
Lush also strives to proactively improve the state of the planet. The manufacturer runs and funds a number of projects in biodiversity hotspots around the world.
These projects use regenerative agriculture, conservation, restoration and collaboration with local communities to produce materials that feed back into its products.
An example of this is Lush turning the waste of its Tagua Nut supplier in Ecuador into a new product.
“Tagua is a non-timber forest product,” Gabbi explains.
“It’s super important to keep those forests standing and create forest economies. Our supplier of these predominantly makes buttons and has the powder left over. Powder which we’ve incorporated back into our process to make a beautiful exfoliant.”
