LUSH : YOU JOIN ONE DAY … AND THEN YOU DON ’ T WANT TO LEAVE
A common thread we found when interviewing Gabbi , Jack and Chase is that they ’ d all joined Lush never anticipating they ’ d still be there decades later . Apparently it ’ s a similar story across the business . Here ’ s why :
Gabbi I did not anticipate being here for two decades but I honestly feel like every day is an opportunity full of learning and challenge .
The opportunities for growth and to make your passions part of your job are endless .
Lush is committed to not being a super heavy top-down organisation , really valuing the input of everyone across the business and encouraging them to have opinions .
Jack Lush feels like a local family business – even at the scale it is at , it still feels like you can walk around Poole and see half of the employees down there .
For me working in the environmental sector , my decisions every day are very easy , very simple at Lush . Because when we determine what the most ethical or environmentally sound option to go with is , we can go for it . Cost , while an important consideration , doesn ’ t overshadow the work we ’ re doing .
Chase I ’ m pretty confident to say I wouldn ’ t have been afforded the opportunities that I have managed to have through Lush .
That goes beyond just the professional level , it also goes into life skills and that personal perspective as well . I joined Lush as a teenager and now coming into my 40s , having children , I think Lush very much connects you beyond just being a job .
We joke about it being a Lush life , but it does very much feel like a Lush life , like you live it , you feel it , you care for it .
A key dimension of this commitment to quality is Lush ’ s commitment to handmade products , bucking the trend of widespread factory automation .
A belief in the value of handmade Something that stands out about Lush is its belief in its handmade , people-led process .
With the rise of industry 4.0 and growing importance of sustainability , mass factory automation is treated as an inevitability for manufacturers , a necessary investment to boost productivity and lower costs .
The subsequent job losses at Port Talbot , at Stellantis ’ s Luton EV plant and at many other factories , are treated as an unfortunate inevitability too . An unpleasant symptom of progress . Lush disrupts this assumption .
