THE FUTURE ERNEST SOLVAY PRIZE : RECOGNISING SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION
In 1911 , Belgian chemist Ernest Solvay brought 24 of the world ’ s brightest minds together to the Solvay Conference in Brussels to advance scientific research .
This conference would later birth Syensqo , and continues to be held to this day . Every two years , Syensqo builds on its legacy by awarding the Future Ernest Solvay Prize to a researcher recognised for major scientific discovery . This prize has been awarded since 2013 , and recipients also receive € 300,000 ( US $ 327,000 ).
This year ’ s winner was Professor Omar Yaghi , recognised for his work in the field of reticular chemistry , the science of building chemical structures from molecular building blocks .
Reticular chemistry is full of promising sustainability applications , from CO2 capture to hydrogen storage to water harvesting to gas purification .
