ARTEMIS II: THE SUPPLIERS BEHIND THE MOON MISSION
CREDIT: NASA / MICHAEL DEMOCKER
NASA’ s Artemis II mission took four astronauts further into space than ever before thanks to the efforts of more than 2,700 suppliers. Manufacturing of the rocket began in 2011, and the 212-foot-tall core stage was made at NASA’ s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans by Boeing. Northrop Grumman built the twin solid rocket boosters, which provided more than 75 % of the initial thrust. Lockheed Martin is the prime contractor for the crew module where the four astronauts lived for nine days. Airbus manufactured the European Service Module( ESM) which provided the Orion spacecraft’ s power, propulsion and life support.
